In May and June of 1978—less than three years after Franco’s death—I traveled through Spain with my camera. The country was in the middle of La Transición, suspended between the weight of forty years of dictatorship and the uncertain promise of a new democracy under Adolfo Suárez.

Rather than focusing on political headlines, I was drawn to the subtle, human beats beneath the intense sun: quiet moments in public squares, crowds lingering after a bullfight, or a solitary morning stroll. These photographs capture everyday people shaking off decades of shadows, stepping into a pivotal threshold of history.
